Origin

The jalapeno chilli cultivar originates from the Papaloapan river basin in the state of Veracruz in Mexico and named after the city of Xalapa, capital of that state.  

Description

Jalapeno is a medium-sized chilli with fruit to about 7cm long that ripen from green to red.  Jalapeno has a Scoville rating between 2,500 and 10,000 which makes it a mild-medium strength chilli.  The chilli plants grows to about 1m tall under ideal conditions and produce fruit over a long time period.  

Uses

The bite provided by this chilli is useful in cooking as it can be used to flavour dishes without overpowering them with extreme heat, although chilli aficionados may find them too mild.  This variety is used extensively in Mexican cuisine.  Also delicious when pickled and added to sandwiches.

Germination

Sow seed 6mm deep spacing planting holes about 45cm apart.  For best results, jalapeno chilli seed should be planted in the following times: In the tropics or subtropics sow anytime during the year; In temperate regions sow anytime during Spring as long as any chance of frost has past, seeds can be started early indoors in punnets to make the most of the growing season.  Jalapeno chilli seeds take between 12 and 24 days to germinate.

Cultivation

This variety grows wells in larger containers.  Takes 10 to 11 weeks from sowing the chilli seed until harvest.
