Growing Advice

Common Names: Chilli 'Hungarian Yellow Wax', Chilli 'Hot Banana'

Family: Solanaceae

Origin

As the name of this variety suggest, Hungarian Yellow Wax chillis were first grown in Hungary.

Culinary Uses

Fruits of this variety can be pickled when greenish yellow when unripe, or through the various ripening stages of yellow, orange or red when fully ripe.  This is a mild to medium heat heirloom chilli variety with a Scoville rating generally between 5,000 and 10,000, making it a little hotter than a jalapeno depending on growing conditions.  Can be used to add zing to pickles, fresh or cooked dishes.  Great for grilling whole or in slices, stuffing and roasting, or for dicing and adding to hot salsas.  Hungarian Yellow Wax chillis grow between 10cm and 15cm long.

Growing Tips

Hungarian Yellow Wax is an easy to grow heirloom chilli that produces better than most other chilli varieties in cooler regions of Australia.  Pinch out shoot tips to encourage bushier growth and greater numbers of chilli peppers.  Harvest regularly to encourage further flower production.  These chilli peppers are large so the plant will need staking to prevent it falling over when in full fruit.  Fertilise soil well with organic fertiliser before planting but reduce feeding as plant is reaching maturity as too much fertiliser at this stage can cause excess leaf production at the expense of fruit.  Ensure you plant your chilli plants into free draining soil.

How To Sow

Sow Hungarian Yellow Wax chilli seeds 6mm deep into the soil spacing plants about 45cm apart to allow plenty of room for growth.  Choose a site that receives full sunlight for best fruit production, although you'll still be able to harvest a few chillis if planting in light shade.

When To Sow

Sow chilli seed all year round in tropical and subtropical regions of Australia.  In temperate regions of Australia sow from September to November for best growth.

Time To Germination

Hungarian Yellow Wax chilli seeds take between 12 and 24 days to emerge after sowing.

Time To Harvest

This variety takes between 10 and 11 weeks to produce fruits.
